This Month's Tip:

WROUGHT IRON

Wrought iron is now popular for home décor, and there are many ways it can be used.

The word “wrought” is an archaic past tense of the verb to work.  As irregular past-tense forms in English have been phased out, wrought became worked.  Wrought iron literally means worked iron.

Wrought iron is commercially pure iron, having a small amount of carbon content and usually containing some slag.  It’s tough, malleable, and easily welded.  It has been used for thousands of years; the slag content provides a “grain” resembling wood.

Wrought iron was originally used to help protect windows and doors from intruders and for decorative places such as the Canterbury Cathedral and the Notre Dame de Paris.  Home decorating with wrought iron became popular around the 16th century.  Today, most wrought iron has been replaced by mild steel in commercial use, but it has become popular once again on the home front.
